Detoxification – Juice Fasting

Fasting is the oldest healing method known to man but there is a lot of confusion about the term. A true fast does not include any food or drink other than water. Juice fasting is a form of detoxification or detox, for short, that uses fresh juices from raw vegetables or fruits.

Although detoxification with water fasting has been used for many hundreds of years by some of the world’s most respected healers and physicians many believe it may not be so appropriate today.

The main cause of disease and ageing is the accumulation of toxic waste products in the cells. During a fast the digestive system and other organs body are rested and the body has the energy to eliminate or detox the wastes and after the first 3 days will feed on or auto-digest the diseased and damaged cells.

The experience of the European health spas has shown that drinking only vegetable or fruit juices during a fast greatly increases the cleansing or detoxification capacity of the body. The juices supply nutrients that help speed up the elimination of the wastes and the rebuilding of tissues. So you can probably detox your body faster using juices.

Fruit juices are considered to be more aggressive cleansers than vegetable juices. Citrus juices are the most aggressive of all and are probably best used only by people who have experience of fasting. Citrus juices may aggravate some conditions such as arthritis.

Freshly made juices are rich in enzymes, vitamins and minerals. They are absorbed directly into the body requiring very little digestion. The juices contain alkaline minerals which help neutralize the very acidic toxic wastes that are being eliminated from the cells into the blood and tissues.

It is often argued that any form of fasting releases dangerous chemicals that have been stored safely in the fat layers which can cause acute symptoms as they are released. Experts have stated that the rich nutrient content of raw fresh juices help neutralize and more efficiently expel the poisons making it far safer than water fasting.

Detoxification using juicing should be combined with daily exercise, skin brushing and enemas to make it even more effective and safe. Natural bowel movements do not occur during fasting due to lack of food, fibre and stimulation. The bowel is one way that toxic wastes are eliminated from the body.  A daily water enema helps flush the bowel removing the toxins before they can be reabsorbed back into the system.

Juices are best made from fresh organic produce with a non-centrifugal juicer to preserve the enzymes. They should be drunk slowly but immediately after making and not stored or some of the enzymes and nutrients will deteriorate.

What juices should you use? Different juices can be helpful for different conditions and there are many books on the subject. If you are fasting to detox and cleanse your body and rejuvenate then most juices from fruit or vegetables will be suitable. It is better not to mix fruit and vegetables apart from using a little apple to sweeten some of the more bitter green juices or mixing with carrot juice.

“Green juices” are particularly good. These are made from any variety of any edible green leaves such as lettuce, watercress, chard, baby spinach, rocket, carrot or beet tops and parsley. Some people like to add celery and cucumber and sweeten the juice a little with the juice of a small apple.

Many detoxification programs include 1 – 3 days juice fasting. Longer juice fasts should be done under some supervision or with the help of an experienced naturopathic doctor or nutritionist.

Juice fasts are often preceded by some sort of colon clease and a cleansing diet. You should certainly make some changes in your diet before you go on any sort of a fast following the usual guidelines. And for 2 -3 days before the juice fast eat nothing but raw fruit and vegetables.

Breaking the fast is very important as your stomach and digestive system need to get used to food again. Introduce food very slowly and gradually and chew it really well. Raw food is best but in really cold weather a small bowl of homemade vegetable broth or soup can be taken. Take at least three days to lead back into a healthy and nutritious diet to help rebuild cells and tissues. It is most important not to overeat.

People with cancer, diabetes other serious health problems or pregnant women should get the advice of a doctor familiar with juice fasting, an experienced nutritionist or naturopath.
